Roll-Ups: These are fun competitions run at the discretion of the organiser of the day and usually have an entry fee of €2.
Your annual membership fee to The Celts Club de Golf will cover the entry fee to all Medal, Crystal, Golf Prizes and Club Championship competitions, plus the Charity Day dinner, The Captain’s and President’s Prize and Dinner Dance that night.
Federated Competitions. Handicap limit of 26 for Men and 30 for Women. There will be no roll ups during federated competitions. For all federated competitions, members will be obliged to return their scores by using the Golf Directo app which can be downloaded from the Google Play store. Members should, on checking their scores with their marker, confirm their score on the app.
Crystal: Federated competition off the slope with prizes for 1st, 2nd., 3rd. in Galway Crystal. Stableford comp. No entry fee once annual membership is paid. Two categories – Cat. 1 is 0 to 14.4; Cat. 2 is 14.5 and above.
Medal: Stroke play federated competition off the slope with specially commissioned Celts silver medals in three categories, which are 0 to 9.4; 9.5 to 17.4; 17.5 and above. Cat. 1 and 2 players play off the white tees (men) and Blue tees (ladies). Cat. 3 players play Stroke play comp. off the yellow tees (men) and red tees ( ladies). No entry fee once membership is paid. In Medal competitions from November to March, the tees will be yellow and red for all categories.
Fed Comp for golf prizes on other weekends when enough members play and prizes are in 2 categories 14.4 and under and 14.5 and over. No entry fee once membership is paid.
The Course is set up each weekend for competitions and members who play the course on Saturday, whether in the designated competition or not, cannot book or play again on Sunday, unless there are spaces ( check with organiser after booking closes ) and then only as a casual game as you are not allowed to play ( practice) the course before the competition.
Celts Club Championship: Federated Competition open to members and guests with prizes of 1st., 2nd.and Gross overall and 1st., 2nd., and 3rd., in three categories for members. Also 6 nearest the pins, along with guest prize if more than 3 guests. Entry fee €3 and a drink and bap for members is supplied by The Celts Club de Golf. Celts members who are not La Serena members entry fee €35 inc. drink and bap. Guests €45 entry fee inc. drink and bap. Non-federation guests must pay €2 ins.
All outstanding prizes for crystal, medal, golf prizes and club championships are presented after the last card is returned on Club Championship day. Prize-winners are expected to attend, but if unable must nominate a member to collect their prize on the day. Those nominated will collect the prizes after the presentation of prizes to those present. Prizes that are not collected on the day go back in the pot. Novelty prizes such as nearest the pin or long drive will be put up for draw on the cards if not collected in person on the day.
There are 9 Club Championship events and points are allocated to the top 25 players on each day with 25 points going to the player in first place and 1 point to the player in 25th. place. The Champion at the end of the year is the player with most points from 7 events. The 2019 winner was Terry Fitzgerald. Again 2020 and 2021 Club Championships were deferred until 2021/22 and was won by John O Brien. The 2022/23 Club Championship was held over 9 events starting in April 2022 and concluding in March 2023, and was won by Dave Stockton. Clive Jenkins was the winner of the Club Championship in March 2024.
All federated competitions are subject to scores being returned to the federation and handicaps are adjusted upwards and downwards depending on the score. The Celts have a handicap limit of 30 for ladies and 26 for men in all club competitions.
We have three Majors during the year:- The Captain’s Prize usually in May/June; The President’s Prize in October and Hamper in December. Captain’s and President’s prize competitions are played off the white tees for men and blue tees for ladies. The presentation of prizes for these events takes place at a Dinner that night. To qualify as a winner of either Major, you must have been a member of The Celts for the previous 12 months and attend the presentation in person.
We also have a free day at La Serena for members which besides snack and dinner involves fun golf of sorts and is limited to numbers. Members who qualify are invited by The President and The Captain. This is usually a charity day to raise funds for a nominated charity. This event raised €800 for Cancer, Torrevieja in 2018, and €1222 in 2019 which was donated to Stroke Foundation, Pilar. 2020 fund of €1000 was donated to Niki for child with Mitochondrial Disease. In 2021 we raised €1600 and it was given to Help at Home and to Finca de Castellans both worthwhile charities. The event in 2022 raised €2229.50 for A.E.C.C. ( Cancer Charity ). A.E.C.C. is now our designated charity and in 2023 we raised €2685 which was transferred to them after all donations were received.
